Welfare Considerations

Tail docking is a painful procedure that treats the symptom of tail biting without addressing its cause: the overcrowded, understimulating environments of intensive pig farming. In natural conditions, pigs spend most of their day foraging and rooting. In bare concrete pens with nothing to do, they redirect their rooting and biting behaviors at each other. Tail docking makes severe injury less likely, but biting still occurs. Addressing the root cause through enrichment, reduced stocking density, and better housing eliminates both the problem and the painful procedure.
