Welfare Considerations

Veal production has historically involved some of the most intensive confinement in animal agriculture. Individual veal crates that prevent calves from turning around or engaging in any natural behavior were standard practice for decades. The EU ban on these crates in 2007 represented a significant welfare improvement. Rosé veal, produced from calves in group housing with access to iron-containing feed, is a higher welfare alternative to traditional pale veal. However, the fundamental issue of male dairy calves being considered byproducts of dairy production remains.
