Their ectothermic physiology means they require precise thermal environments to digest food, avoid disease, and maintain metabolic function. Most cages sold for pet snakes do not provide adequate temperature gradients. Respiratory infections from inadequate heat are extremely common. Many pet snakes are wild-caught despite captive-bred alternatives, experiencing trauma during capture and transport. Education about snake needs and encouraging captive-bred acquisition from reputable sources would dramatically improve welfare for this widespread pet group.
