Chicken social dynamics are complex and have important welfare implications for housing design. In natural flocks of up to about 30 birds, individuals form stable dominance hierarchies that reduce ongoing aggression. In large commercial flocks of thousands, stable hierarchies cannot form and chickens experience chronic low-level conflict. This drives injurious pecking behavior that producers manage through beak trimming. Beak trimming reduces injury but is itself a painful procedure causing acute and sometimes chronic pain. Systems designed to support natural social behavior through smaller group sizes, visual barriers, multiple resources, and breed selection for less aggressive birds can reduce both the problem and the intervention.
