Modern zoos justify keeping animals through conservation, education, and research contributions. These contributions are real: captive breeding programs have genuinely saved species from extinction, and conservation funding from zoos supports critical field programs. However, the welfare costs to individual animals — especially wide-ranging species like elephants and polar bears — are significant. Honest evaluation requires acknowledging both the conservation value and the welfare costs, and working to reduce the latter through improved housing, enrichment, and species selection that prioritizes animals whose welfare needs can be adequately met in captivity. The best zoos are genuinely working on both fronts simultaneously.
