The most common tortoise welfare failures involve temperature, diet, and substrate. Without adequate UVB lighting and calcium, shells become soft and deformed, causing permanent damage. Overcrowding in rescue centers spreads respiratory infections and parasite loads. Insufficient space prevents natural thermoregulatory behavior. Many tortoise keepers underestimate the multi-decade commitment required — leading to abandonment.
