Miniature or micro pigs have been heavily marketed as apartment-friendly pets. The reality is that pigs grow much larger than advertised and have complex needs most owners cannot meet.
The miniature pig industry has caused widespread welfare harm through deliberate misrepresentation of adult size. Animals sold as teacup pigs are typically underweight juveniles who grow to full size within 2 to 3 years, resulting in surrender when owners are unprepared. Surrendered pigs often end up in rescue organizations unable to cope with the volume. Even well-cared-for pet pigs face welfare limitations from indoor environments that prevent natural rooting, wallowing, and extensive movement. Their intelligence means boredom and frustration cause genuine suffering.
