Chimpanzees removed from social groups for research experience lasting psychological damage. Sanctuary care must provide species-appropriate groups, natural climbing structures, problem-solving challenges, and compassionate long-term care. Underfunded sanctuaries cannot provide adequate space or enrichment, leaving former research subjects in a second tier of deprivation.
