Welfare Considerations

Shrimp welfare is among the most neglected in aquaculture. Eyestalk ablation, which removes the organ controlling reproduction, is performed by crushing or cutting without pain relief. High stocking densities increase aggression, disease, and mortality. Growing scientific evidence suggests shrimp experience aversive states warranting welfare consideration.
