Fish are among the most neglected companion animals despite being the most numerous kept globally.
Fish welfare in home aquariums is profoundly neglected. Most pet fish are kept in tanks too small, with inadequate filtration, inappropriate tank mates, and no enrichment. The widespread belief that fish have three-second memories and do not suffer is scientifically false — fish show learning, social complexity, and clear responses to painful stimuli. Educating new fishkeepers about realistic fish needs is a significant welfare priority.
