Like broiler chickens, commercial turkeys have been genetically selected for rapid growth and large breast muscle mass to the detriment of their health and welfare. Many commercial turkeys cannot walk normally and are unable to reproduce naturally. The environmental conditions of commercial turkey barns — overcrowded, barren, and often with poor air quality — compound the welfare problems caused by selective breeding. Slower-growing heritage breeds and higher-welfare certifications provide meaningful alternatives.
