Mandatory animal welfare labeling would enable consumers to make informed choices and reward higher-welfare producers.
The current food labeling landscape is deliberately confusing. Terms like cage-free, free-range, and natural have minimal regulatory definition, allowing misleading marketing. Mandatory, standardized welfare labeling — using a tiered system based on independently audited welfare standards — would transform the information available to consumers and create genuine market incentives for welfare improvement. The EU approach, developing a mandatory labeling system for all animal products, provides a model for other jurisdictions.
