Welfare Considerations

Pet hamster welfare is a significant concern because small cage sizes are normalized by the pet industry despite being inadequate for the animals behavioral needs. Hamsters are highly active — wild hamsters travel up to 9 km per night. Small cages cause chronic stress that manifests in bar-chewing, repetitive behaviors, and aggression. Inadequate wheel size causes spinal damage. Daytime handling disturbs sleep cycles. Education about species-appropriate housing is the most impactful intervention for hamster welfare.
