Whether this constitutes morally relevant suffering is uncertain but not definitively excluded. The scale of snail farming — tens of thousands of tonnes — means that even a small probability of sentience represents a significant welfare consideration. Developing more humane slaughter methods and applying a precautionary approach to snail farming welfare seems warranted given this uncertainty.
