Barn and farm cats occupy an ambiguous welfare position. At best, they are working animals with a defined role, regular food access, and basic veterinary care. At worst, they are abandoned to fend for themselves with no healthcare and high mortality from predation, disease, and exposure. The working cat role is legitimate — cats are skilled pest controllers — but working status should not exempt them from basic welfare consideration. Vaccinations, parasite control, spay-neuter, and basic medical care are reasonable minimum standards for farm cats as for any working animal.
