The Welfare of Animals in Laboratory Safety Testing

Safety testing for chemicals, pesticides, and industrial compounds uses millions of animals annually.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Chemical safety testing represents a large and often overlooked category of animal use. LD50 and other toxicity tests cause clear suffering — animals are dosed with substances until they die or show severe toxic effects. The scientific limitations of these tests are well-documented — many animal toxicology results do not predict human outcomes reliably. Regulatory reform accepting validated non-animal alternatives and the development of in vitro and computational methods are both progressing, but the pace of change is slower than welfare advocates and scientists argue is warranted.
