Freshwater mussels are the most endangered group of animals in North America, with habitat destruction and pollution driving rapid extinctions.
While freshwater mussels have limited sentience, their ecological role in filtering and cleaning water systems supports vast communities of other animals. Their extinction removes a critical welfare service for fish, amphibians, and invertebrates that depend on clean water.
