Welfare Considerations

Alpacas and llamas suffer when shearing is done roughly or without proper restraint and sedation. Overcrowded farms cause stress and disease transmission. Long-distance transport for live export subjects them to extreme conditions, dehydration, and injury. Inadequate shelter in non-native climates causes hypothermia and respiratory disease.
