Welfare Considerations

Reef fish surviving cyanide exposure develop liver damage that causes slow death within days or weeks. Blast fishing causes immediate death in some fish but injuries and slow death from pressure trauma in many others. Bleaching events that kill coral eliminate shelter and feeding habitat, causing starvation and predation. The welfare harms experienced by billions of individual reef fish represent an enormous but largely invisible scale of suffering.
