Welfare Considerations

Manta rays caught for the gill plate trade are often finned and returned to the water to drown, or killed on board under prolonged stress. Their large size means capture and restraint is extremely stressful. Tourism boats that approach too closely disrupt natural feeding and mating behavior. Vessel strikes cause serious injuries to these slow-moving animals.
