Welfare Considerations

Tapirs injured by vehicles suffer traumatic deaths in the forests increasingly bisected by roads. Deforestation forces them into smaller habitat fragments where they face increased predation, competition, and human conflict. Captive tapirs require large naturalistic enclosures that many zoos cannot provide, leading to chronic psychological and physical health problems.
