The Five Freedoms framework revolutionized animal welfare thinking but has significant limitations when applied to complex welfare science today.
While the Five Freedoms provided a foundational framework for welfare assessment, they focus on preventing negative states rather than promoting positive ones. Animals can technically satisfy all Five Freedoms while still experiencing chronically poor welfare in barren environments. Modern welfare science demands we also ask what animals want, what they enjoy, and how they experience their lives — not only what harms them.
