Welfare Considerations

The welfare of farmed salmon is a large-scale and under-appreciated problem. Sea lice attach to skin and gills, causing tissue damage and physiological stress. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide or mechanical brushes itself causes injury. The salmon slaughter process is particularly problematic — fish frequently regain consciousness during the killing process if methods are poorly applied.
