Cultivated meat — grown from animal cells without slaughter — offers the potential to dramatically reduce the suffering inherent in conventional animal agriculture.
From a welfare perspective, cultivated meat offers the most direct path to eliminating the suffering of the billions of animals currently killed annually for food. If production costs reach price parity, the welfare potential is enormous. Current challenges include energy-intensive production, growth media requiring animal-derived components, and the need for continued cellular biology development. The welfare case for supporting cultivated meat research and production is compelling.
