Urban foxes exist in a contested welfare space: celebrated by many urban residents and persecuted by others. Sarcoptic mange causes extreme suffering — intense pruritus, hair loss, and eventually starvation — and is entirely treatable if diagnosed and treated early. Wildlife organizations run mange treatment programs that dramatically reduce suffering in affected foxes. Coexistence education reduces persecution while humane deterrence addresses genuine conflict situations.
