Animal welfare and environmentalism share deep common ground but have historically operated as separate advocacy movements with different philosophies and priorities.
The relationship between animal welfare and environmentalism is complex. Conservation goals sometimes require actions that cause individual suffering — predator reintroduction increases prey stress; invasive species removal causes suffering in the removed individuals. But the movements share a deep common cause in reducing human harm to the living world, and their separation has weakened both. A welfare-informed environmentalism that takes individual animal experience seriously alongside species and ecosystem health is more ethically coherent and practically effective.
