Welfare Considerations

Down welfare is a certification and traceability problem. Responsible Down Standard and similar certifications prohibit live plucking and force-feeding, but supply chain complexity makes verification difficult. Down from byproduct slaughter has a lower incremental welfare cost than dedicated waterfowl farming — the birds were already being raised for meat. Live plucked down, however, involves birds plucked multiple times before slaughter, with each plucking causing acute pain and stress.
