Rabbits are among the most common laboratory animals, yet their welfare needs differ substantially from other common species.
Rabbits are often misread as tolerant of handling because they freeze rather than vocalize when stressed. Their need for social contact, space to run and binky, and hiding spaces is frequently unmet in research settings. The 3Rs framework (Replace, Reduce, Refine) is not consistently applied to rabbit research.
