Nature is neither peaceful nor cruel — it is indifferent to individual welfare. The romantic view of wild animals living fulfilling lives is contradicted by the reality that most individuals die young and painfully. This does not imply intervention is always appropriate, but it challenges the assumption that wild equals welfare-positive. Expanding our moral consideration to include wild animal suffering is intellectually honest.
