Behavior problems cause enormous suffering — to the animals experiencing anxiety, fear, or compulsive behaviors, and to the owners who relinquish them. Most problems are preventable through socialization, training, and meeting behavioral needs. When they develop, evidence-based behavioral intervention (not punishment) is effective. The welfare of animals with behavior problems depends on owner education and access to behavioral expertise.
