Livestock Biosecurity and Welfare

Disease biosecurity and animal welfare are closely linked — welfare improvements often reduce disease risk.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Biosecurity failures cause mass animal suffering through disease outbreaks and culling events. The conditions that compromise welfare — overcrowding, stress, poor air quality, inadequate nutrition — also compromise immunity. Better welfare is better biosecurity. The reverse is also true: biosecurity failures lead to the mass killing of healthy animals, a welfare catastrophe alongside the production loss.
