Welfare Considerations

Wild boar and feral pigs present a challenging welfare case because they cause genuine harm to ecosystems and agriculture while themselves being sentient, socially complex animals. Control programs that use 1080 poison or steel traps cause prolonged suffering. Social group disruption from hunting leaves orphaned piglets and disrupts the learned knowledge transmission within sounders (family groups). More humane control methods exist but are rarely prioritized.
