Farmed crustaceans are subject to almost no welfare regulation despite growing evidence for their sentience. Shrimp are raised in crowded tanks with water quality that may cause chronic stress, transported live in containers, and killed by methods that cause prolonged distress. The Shrimp Welfare Project estimates that improving slaughter methods alone could reduce suffering for tens of billions of animals annually at minimal cost. Consumer demand for welfare-certified crustaceans could rapidly drive adoption of improved slaughter standards.
