Farmed Shrimp Welfare Opportunities

Shrimp farming produces enormous quantities of the most consumed seafood globally, with significant and tractable welfare improvement opportunities.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Shrimp welfare represents one of the highest-impact opportunities in animal welfare because of the enormous numbers involved and the low cost of improvement. If shrimp can experience something like pain — and the evidence is growing that they can — then the current standard of slow death by ice immersion causes suffering at a scale that dwarfs almost any other food production welfare issue. Electrical stunning at slaughter would cost fractions of a cent per animal and could be implemented industry-wide rapidly with appropriate regulatory or market pressure.
