Welfare Considerations

Marine protected areas are one of the few conservation interventions that simultaneously benefit populations of individual marine animals, ecosystem function, and carbon sequestration. Within MPAs where fishing is restricted, individual fish experience dramatically lower predation pressure from fishing gear, longer lives, and healthier population demographics. The welfare of individual marine animals and the health of marine ecosystems are functionally inseparable — protecting one requires protecting the other.
