Recognizing and managing pain in cattle is fundamental to welfare but remains inconsistently practiced in most production systems.
Cattle pain recognition has advanced significantly with the development of validated pain assessment tools based on facial action coding. These tools allow farm staff and veterinarians to identify pain in animals that cannot verbalize their experience. Despite the availability of effective, affordable pain management with NSAIDs, treatment for common painful procedures remains inconsistent. Building a culture in cattle farming where pain management is the expected default — as it is in companion animal medicine — requires training, regulation, and professional norms change.
