Anxiety and fear are among the most prevalent welfare problems in companion dogs, often undertreated and misunderstood.
Canine anxiety and fear cause chronic welfare deficits that reduce quality of life throughout affected dogs' lives. Dogs experiencing separation anxiety spend significant portions of their time in a state of distress. Noise phobic dogs experience acute terror multiple times annually. These conditions are treatable through behavioral modification and, where needed, medication — yet most dogs with anxiety disorders never receive effective treatment due to under-recognition by owners and under-prescription by veterinarians. Building awareness of anxiety as a welfare issue and treatment as a responsibility is essential.
