Dehorning is among the most painful routine procedures performed on cattle, and pain management dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
Cattle dehorning causes significant pain that is well-documented through behavioral, physiological, and neurological indicators. Calves undergoing hot iron or saw dehorning without pain management show acute pain responses — vocalizations, escape behaviors, elevated cortisol — that persist for hours to days. Local anesthetic eliminates acute pain during the procedure and NSAID treatment reduces subsequent inflammation. The combination is effective, available, and affordable, yet used in a minority of cases globally due to time and cost pressures in commercial cattle production.
