Cheetahs are the most difficult large cat to maintain successfully in captivity due to their extreme stress sensitivity and complex reproductive requirements.

Welfare Considerations

Cheetah captive welfare is genuinely difficult to achieve given their extreme stress sensitivity. Standard zoo housing approaches that work for lions and tigers cause chronic welfare deficits in cheetahs. Only specialized facilities with large, low-disturbance enclosures can meet their needs.
