Captive wolves and wolf-dog hybrids face significant welfare challenges from their needs as complex social predators.
Captive wolves experience chronic stress in insufficient enclosures. Their strong drive to roam, hunt, and engage in complex social hierarchies cannot be satisfied in typical captive settings. Wolf hybrids often end up in shelters or sanctuaries unable to care for them. Lack of enrichment leads to repetitive pacing and other stereotypic behaviors. Many are acquired as exotic pets and surrender when owners cannot manage them.
