Welfare Considerations

Meerkats in petting zoo settings or as exotic pets are usually singly or pair-housed, violating their deep need for complex mob social structure. Wild meerkats have territories of 5 square km which no captive setting can replicate. Stress-induced aggression in small groups is common. Removed from mob structure, subordinate meerkats show developmental and reproductive stress. Contact with humans overrides their natural alarm behavior causing chronic low-grade fear states.
