Prairie dogs in captivity without appropriate social groups develop severe psychological distress. Their need for burrowing cannot be met in typical enclosures. Social separation causes persistent calling and anxiety. Their intelligence requires mental stimulation far beyond what typical pet keeping provides. Isolated prairie dogs often become aggressive from frustration. These colony animals need conditions most pet owners simply cannot provide.
