Dancing bears endure some of the most extreme welfare violations documented in animal use. Captured as cubs, they lost their mothers to hunting. Nose piercings without anesthesia created painful control points used throughout their lives. Forced dancing on hot coals or pavement traumatized their paws. They lived on chains deprived of natural foraging and roaming. Rehabilitation of rescued bears requires years and many never recover full behavioral health. This practice represents concentrated, chronic, deliberate suffering.
