Cattle on extensive range systems generally have better welfare than intensive feedlot operations, but challenges remain around branding, castration, and roundup stress.
Range cattle benefit from freedom of movement and natural behavior expression compared to feedlot systems. However, welfare challenges remain in husbandry practices. Hot-iron branding causes acute pain. Castration without anesthesia causes pain lasting days. Dehorning without anesthesia is similarly painful. Weaning is highly stressful. While welfare is generally better than confinement systems, the industry resistance to pain relief for routine procedures means unnecessary suffering continues at scale.
