Cephalopods including octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish are increasingly used in scientific research, with their recognised sentience creating ethical obligations that most research frameworks are only beginning to address.
Cephalopod research welfare is a frontier area where regulatory frameworks are ahead of established practice, at least in the EU. The science of cephalopod anaesthesia, pain assessment, and humane endpoint definition is still developing, meaning researchers must exercise significant professional judgement in areas where evidence-based guidance is limited. The octopus cognitive complexity documented in multiple research programmes simultaneously demonstrates why welfare protection is warranted and why meeting that standard is challenging. Investment in cephalopod-specific welfare science, including validated anaesthesia protocols and non-invasive monitoring methods, is the priority need.
