Welfare Considerations

Male dairy calves are among the most welfare-compromised animals in food systems. Early separation from mothers causes acute distress in both cow and calf. Traditional veal systems deprived calves of social contact, movement, and iron, causing anemia and frustration. High-welfare alternatives exist — rose veal, buddy systems, extended suckling — but require market incentives. Sex-sorted semen technology may reduce surplus males in future.
