Sea lice management exemplifies the welfare complexity of intensive aquaculture. The parasites themselves cause chronic pain and immune suppression; the treatments cause acute distress. Cleaner fish introduced to eat lice are often sourced from the wild, kept without appropriate enrichment, and experience high mortality. No current treatment is welfare-neutral. Long-term solutions — closed containment systems that prevent lice entry, selective breeding for resistance, and improved cleaner fish welfare standards — represent the clearest path to reducing suffering in this system.
