Hamsters are popular pocket pets whose welfare is almost universally compromised in captivity due to standard cage sizes that are too small and husbandry practices that ignore their nocturnal, solitary biology.
Hamster welfare is a case study in how retail misinformation creates widespread animal suffering at scale. The small, colourful cages marketed for hamsters in pet stores bear no relationship to the welfare needs of the animal inside. A hamster living in a cage with insufficient floor space, a small wheel, and no burrowing substrate is in a state of chronic deprivation -- running in tight circles on an undersized wheel is a known stereotypy indicating frustration. The evidence base for hamster welfare standards is clear; the gap is between what welfare science says and what retail normalises. Consumer education and retail regulation are the most direct paths to improvement.
