Communities recovering from conflict often depend on livestock for food security and livelihoods, and supporting animal welfare in these contexts is both a humanitarian and welfare imperative.
Post-conflict livestock welfare is a neglected dimension of both humanitarian response and animal welfare advocacy. Animals in these settings suffer from the same deprivations as in acute emergencies -- starvation, untreated injury, disease -- but the recovery phase may last years with persistently inadequate support. Restocking programmes that prioritise rapid numbers over animal quality and welfare create ongoing suffering in the animals supplied. Integrating welfare standards into post-conflict livestock programmes -- including veterinary support, appropriate feed, and shelter -- serves both animal welfare and community resilience, since healthy animals are more productive and valuable to the families who depend on them.
