Abalone farming is a growing sector in several countries, and the welfare status of these large marine snails is emerging as a question for welfare-conscious consumers.
Abalone welfare sits in the zone of genuine scientific uncertainty about gastropod sentience. These animals have a nervous system capable of coordinating complex behaviours and responding to damaging stimuli with avoidance, but lack the centralised brain architecture of vertebrates. Whether these responses involve subjective suffering is unknown. At the scales of commercial abalone farming -- millions of individuals per facility -- the precautionary principle suggests that welfare considerations deserve attention. Stocking density management and investigation of more humane slaughter methods are reasonable welfare investments given the uncertainty, particularly as production expands rapidly.
